Cutting food waste in your kitchen

Food waste is expensive and avoidable. Four habits that make a real difference, none of which take more than a few minutes.

Food waste is one of the more solvable problems of modern life, with both an environmental and a financial cost. A few small habits make a genuine difference:

Plan before you shop

Keep a list of what you actually need. Avoid impulse buying, and use an online shop like ePantry.gr to order more methodically — it is harder to buy something twice when you can see your basket.

Store things properly

Every food has its own shelf life and its own conditions. Knowing which is which is most of the battle: it lets you use things while they are still good.

Old food, new meals

Before you throw something out, ask whether it can be used another way. Vegetables that have gone soft become soup or sauce. Stale bread becomes croutons.

Freeze what you will not get to

Anything you will not eat soon goes in the freezer, in proper containers or bags. It buys you weeks.

None of this is difficult once you know what you are doing. A few simple steps cut waste noticeably, save money, and add up to something more sustainable.
